Relationship status - husbands/wives/domestic partners/divorces/deaths/children/grandchildren? Tell us about your other family members we might know.

I’ve been married to my wonderful wife Cathy for 36 years. No Kids (unless you count our Dogs). Many will remember my Mom & Dad. “Mr. L” was that Band Director / Music Teacher for ALL Duarte Schools starting in 1953 until we left Duarte in June of 1971. He continued to teach in Newport Beach until 1992. 39 years total. Dad also helped write the Charter that allowed Duarte to become an Incorporated City and served as the First Vice Mayor. He also owned Go-Go Raceways, the Slot Car Store on Huntington from 67-71. Dad passed in 2004. “Mrs L.” started teaching at Royal Oaks, moved on to Northview then DHS where she taught Home Ec and led the “Falconettes”. She taught at Fountain Valley High School from 1971-1994. She is 92 years old, ad lives in Huntington Beach. My sister Karen graduated from DHS, class of 71, then from UC Irvine and went on to teach Art for a couple of years, decided it wasn’t for her and went into the surf apparel business, helping to launch the Maui & Sons brand among others. She is retired and lives with her husband Dave in Winchester, CA

Please upload a few recent pictures here. Family pictures are of course welcome!

Job history? What jobs have you had over the last 50 years?

After the typical HS jobs (Restaurants, Gas Stations, tire store) I’ve been in the Automotive industry since 1975. I started in the performance VW business as the manager of a Retail Store and then when the Mini Truck fad began, I started a store catering to that market. When my partner got involved with the Mafia, I left. Dad and I bought a Music store in Irvine. We eventually had 5 locations. During that time I was still in automotive as well, with my Race Shop in the same building as our Tustin Store. I worked in the Harley Davidson industry for about 5 years starting in 99 (and still had a race car shop). I returned to the Automotive world and spent 17 years as the Director of R&D for an Ignition and Exhaust manufacturer. In 2022 I left the corporate world and took a position as the curator and car builder for a private Hot Rod collection 2 miles from our home. It’s the dream job.

Are you currently working, retired or somewhere in-between?

As stated above, I’m working for a private Hot Rod collection and it’s not really like working, as Cathy says, “You don’t have a job, you go play in a huge garage and get paid for it”. Don’t know if I’ll ever truly retire.

Did you pursue any further education after High School?

I went to a few different Colleges, but was too anxious to get in the Automotive Industry and after a few years decided I had taken the courses that would serve me wel, and never looked back.

What hobbies/interests/pastimes have you engaged in?

I started riding motorcycles as a young kid (even broke my leg Freshman year riding the 9 Hills course in the San Gabriel Riverbed) and haven’t been without out one since. I met Cathy riding ATC’s and that led to her riding a Harley and we toured all over the country, including a memorable ride with Betsy and Mike Laban that covered California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. I also raced cars winning a Championship in Rally Cars and Two in Off Road Trucks. We’ve been involved with Hot Rods and Cathy has a ’56 T-Bird and a ’29 Ford Roadster Pick Up and I have a ’32 Ford Coupe and a ’32 Ford Roadster Pick Up. When we met, Cathy was very involved with Horse Competitions and after 20 plus years she switched over to showing dogs and we have been all over the country with our Mastiff’s the past 25 or so years.

What city do you currently live in.....for how long? Where else have you lived?

We live in the City of Orange, have been here 36 years. Before getting married I lived in Corona del Mar, Balboa Island, Newport Beach, Irvine, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, and Fountain Valley.

Over the last 50 years, what other cities/states/countries have you visited?

I’ve been in 48 states, you can probably guess the two. Also six Provinces of Canada, various parts of Mexico, Hong Kong and Taiwan

Share with us your most memorable experiences of the last 50 years?

Getting Married to my soul mate! Playing in Big Bands with my Dad. Owning a Motorcycle Speedway team, and one of my riders won an Indoor Championship in Amsterdam. Watching Cathy become a Successful Dog Show Handler and twice having the Top Mastiff Bitch (female in dog show talk) at the Mastiff Nationals. Having the 32 Ford that I built being one of the Finalists for the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster Competition. Touring the Country, Baja California, and Canada on Motorcycles and in a Roadster ~ you see and smell things you’d never see in a normal car.
